“I remember a surveyor coming to look at the floors, the ceilings and the joists – the building itself. I remember at that time that they said ‘Get all the people off the first floor, get all the books off the first floor, and don’t let more than one person on the floor at any one time!’ and we were all panicked. I remember them saying to us that when the building was built the joists fitted into the walls by a good foot but since then we’d had central heating installed and the joists had shrunk and were now only going into the wall by an inch or an inch and a half. So that is why the floor became very unstable and that’s why the library, ultimately, left the Crescent and went up to Kent’s Bank where it is now.”
