Silverlands County Secondary School for Girls was opened in September 1938 on Peveril Road, Buxton. The school was designed to accommodate 350 senior girls and was opened by the 10th Duke of Devonshire. The school has now been knocked down and replaced by a housing estate.

“The Community schools and Buxton College were where the boys went because we were single sex schools; which I thought were much better than mixed because you concentrated on your school work instead of dolling yourself up with make up, which we couldn’t wear anyway. You couldn’t even have clear nail varnish on, never mind how school girls are all dolled-up now, or you were sent home. I remember one girl, she came to school with her hair bleached blonde and they went mad. You know, you weren’t allowed to have anything like that.”
