At 1020ft above sea level, Buxton market place is the highest market place in England.
Many years ago, there once stood an indoor market hall here until it burnt down in 1885. Pictured below are the traders who lost their livelihoods during the tragic event. The photographer, B.W Bentley, gathered them together to pose amongst the ruins, capturing a powerful image of human loss. Although the Grade II listed building of the Town Hall has replaced the indoor market, today you will still find traders braving the elements with outdoor market stalls every Tuesday and Saturday.
