You should be standing on the Slopes looking down the hill towards the Crescent. How does the view compare with the engraving below?
The tree cover across the Slopes has greatly increased since the 19th century obscuring many of the landmarks shown in the engraving. Try to peek through the trees, can you spot the Crescent, Mineral Baths and St. John’s Church?
You won’t see the Devonshire Dome in the engraving – it wasn’t added until 1879.
The large stone urns shown in the engraving were second hand. They were made in the 1700s and brought from Londesborough Hall, another property of the Dukes of Devonshire, after it was demolished in about 1818.
