Liff’s Low Night Charm

The Fountain Gardens?

22nd March 2017 by

This print from around 1860 shows a view across the Gardens with the Old Hall Hotel in the background. Can you still see the hotel from where you’re standing?

Curiously, the print describes the view across the ‘Fountain Gardens’. This is because it predates the creation of the Pavilion Gardens by at least ten years

This area has been developed as gardens since around 1600, originally attached to the ‘Hall’ (now the Old Hall Hotel). It was altered and improved a number of times, notably by the Duke of Devonshire’s gardener, Joseph Paxton. Shortly after this print was published the gardens would be redeveloped again. The Pavilion Gardens officially opened in 1871.
